Community Involvement

We're passionate about South Africa, about this great land and the wonderful people in it. We feel blessed to be a part of it and, in return, we like to give something back. Which is why we believe in getting involved with our communities as much as we can.

Tongaat Hulett and the Huletts brand are involved in a number of social investment and community building initiatives, focused on developing skills and education for a sustainable future.

Huletts Durban Surf Lifesaving Club Does it Again! - April 2010

The Durban Surf Lifesaving Club (DSLC), proudly sponsored by Huletts, were once again awarded with the senior title at the Hang Ten LSA Surf Lifesaving Championships, held in Port Elizabeth.

The competition was tough and it was only in the final event that DSLC managed to clinch the top spot by adding seven points for fourth place! Their final score of 388 points at the end of the three-day series of events was two points ahead of Fish Hoek and Umhlanga Rocks, who tied for second place.

In the Junior leg of the championships, the Huletts DSLC Nippers were placed second – another excellent achievement! They also won the overall club aggregate.

DSLC Chairman, Wayne Thompson, said that the competition was “truly awesome” to see, and congratulated the team and club captain, Paul Dias, on their achievements.

Huletts has sponsored the DSLSC team since 2007 and its contribution includes the purchase and maintenance of craft and equipment – an invaluable part of the team’s training and operations.

EDU-Self

EDU-Self is a training manual series that began as part of a skills development programme.

Huletts partnered with Golden Cloud in this initiative, empowering women to earn an additional income or open their own small business. Huletts has sponsored 90 000 manuals entitled 'Best Baking Business Guide'.

Lapdesks

Learners at an alarming number of schools have to share desks, or even have no desks at all.

This national initiative provides much needed Lapdesks to rural schools, and Huletts has contributed R1,5 million - a total of 16,500 Lapdesks in 2009 alone.
