Rural agricultural students graduate

Hats off to the 46 students who graduated from the Owen Sitole College of Agriculture in Empangeni on 1 April 2016.
 
Among the graduates were Nhlakanipho Mnguni, Nothando Mpontshane and Sibusiso Zulu, who were supported by Tongaat Hulett during their studies as part of the company’s investment towards rural student development.
 
Mnguni, Mpontshane and Zulu will now go on to participate in a 12-month Work Experience Programme. This is an initiative aimed at providing support to the members of the food security programme, implemented in Mbongolwane and Ndlangubo, which includes 55 food security gardens, as well as a 6.8ha project in Mngampondo.

The graduation ceremony was attended by a wide range of stakeholders including His Majesty, King Goodwill Zwelithini; KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Cyril Xaba; Head of Department, Dr Siphiwe Mkhize; His Worship the Mayor, Mduduzi Mhlongo and Tongaat Hulett Corporate Services Executive, Bongani Gumede. 
 
HIS MAJESTY AND PONTSHANE
 
During his address, College principal, Mr Mazibuko, acknowledged Tongaat Hulett’s contribution towards improving the culture of learning and teaching at Owen Sitole College of Agriculture, which to date, includes an investment of R1.1 million to support 26 rural students. 
 
Of the selected students, 21 are set to study plant production in sugarcane agriculture, while the remaining five will take on the study of animal production. The three-year plant production programme includes experiential training on Tongaat Hulett’s estates during the final six months.
 
Tongaat Hulett is committed to working with Government and relevant stakeholders towards accelerating socio-economic transformation in various rural communities in KZN.
This means providing quality education and training in the communities in which Tongaat Hulett is based. Through its partnership with the Owen Sitole College of Agriculture, Tongaat Hulett has been able to solidify its relationship with the school, ensuring transformation of the College into a Centre of Excellence in the field of sustainable agriculture, which remains in accordance with the standards of Agricultural Training Institutions.
