Monkey Gland Sauce

Monkey Gland Sauce is a restaurant item in South Africa. The tangy sauce is prepared in several manners, and may include a blend of fruit and spices. It is typically served with meats, such as steak, hamburgers, pork ribs or chicken. Makes ± 500 ml sauce


15 ml (3 T) olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
90 g (½ cup) Huletts Treacle Sugar
125 ml (½ cup) water
1 x 410 g can chopped peeled tomatoes
125 ml (½ cup) tomato sauce
125 ml (½ cup) Worcestershire sauce
125 ml (½ cup) chutney
30 ml (2 T) vinegar
5 ml (1 t) Tabasco sauce, optional

  1. Place the olive oil in a saucepan and place over medium heat.
  2. Add the onions and garlic and cook until soft.
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir thoroughly to combine.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 - 40 minutes.
  5. Serve with your favourite steak or burger.
