Sweet & Spicy Chakalaka
When it comes to relish, nothing beats the South African classic – Chakalaka.

Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp. Olive Oil
- 1 Onion, Finely Chopped
- 4 Cloves Garlic, Crushed
- 1 Fresh Red Chilli, deseeded & chopped
- 2 tsp. Fresh Thyme, destalked
- 1 Tbsp. Curry Powder
- 1 Green Pepper, deseeded & sliced
- 1 Red Pepper, deseeded & sliced
- 1 Tin Chopped Tomato
- 3 Tbsp. Tomato Paste
- 3 Large Carrots, peeled & julienned
- 2 Tbsp. Vinegar
- 2 Tbsp. Huletts White Sugar
- 1 tin Cannellini Beans with liquid (or any white beans)
- Salt & Pepper to taste
- Juice of 1 Lemon
Method
- Get a Medium sized saucepan onto the stove at medium to high heat. Sauté the onion and garlic for 3 minutes or until translucent.
- Add the peppers and sauté for a further 5 minutes until the peppers begin to soften.
- Add in the thyme, curry powder & chilli, reduce the heat and sauté for 2 minutes.
- Deglaze the pan with the vinegar, add sugar and the balance of the ingredients.
- Let the relish simmer at a low heat for 10 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and season with lemon juice, salt and pepper.
- Cool and serve with your choice of braai favourites.
- Lasts 2 weeks in an airtight container in the fridge.
