Building strong communities starts with nurturing our future leaders. That’s why Tongaat Hulett is taking action to ensure every child in the areas we operate has the chance for a brighter future. Recently, we donated school uniforms and shoes to learners in Mbongolwane and Umlazi and participated in a local career day hosted by the Mandeni Municipality. Here’s a look at how we’re making a difference.
On Friday, 23rd August, Tongaat Huletts partnered with Simamisagave to donate 100 school uniforms to learners from Emasundwini Primary, Gqokinsimbi High, Mpundumande Primary, Ngedlezi Primary, and Ngilandela Primary Schools. For many families in the Mbongolwane community, unemployment and economic challenges make it difficult to afford basic necessities like school uniforms, forcing children to miss school. This community lies at the heart of our sugarcane operations in the northern region, and we’re committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent learners from accessing education. With these uniforms, we’re ensuring every child can attend school with pride and take strides toward their dreams.
The Mandeni Municipality also hosted a Bursaries and NSFAS Expo to empower learners by showcasing various tertiary education funding opportunities. Tongaat Hulett was proud to participate as one of the invited stakeholders, sharing information about our bursaries, training programmes, and career pathways. Held at the Macambini Community Hall, the event allowed us to connect with learners from four local high schools: Mathubesizwe, Inkosi Somshoko, Ingomakhosi, and Ndondakusuka. Our Matikulu Extension Team was on hand to highlight opportunities in agriculture and extension services, encouraging students to pursue their dreams with the support they need.
Additionally, we visited Vukuzakhe High, a school known for its academic excellence. Recently declared a no-fee school, with many learners coming from nearby informal settlements. To support these dedicated students on their journey to success, we donated 50 pairs of school shoes, helping them put their best foot forward.
