The beauty of Heritage Month is that our recipes tell stories. Stories of where we come from, who we share our tables with and the flavours we grew up loving. This year, we’re starting close to home and rediscovering the taste of our proudly South African cuisine.

We’re starting with: Steamed bread with caramelised onions, spinach and feta

Steamed bread is a South African favourite, but this version brings something irresistibly different to the table: sweet, sticky caramelised onions, creamy spinach and salty feta.  Huletts SunSweet Brown Sugar, balsamic and thyme add delicious depth of flavour, while melted butter brings it all together. It’s the comforting taste of home, with a little Huletts sweetness. Click here for the recipe.

Then we’re serving up: Corn and cheese mealie pap balls with chakalaka

These are braai-time favourites, but we’re giving this much-loved pairing a fun new twist. Imagine soft, cheesy pap balls packed with sweetcorn, served with a rich, spicy chakalaka bursting with flavour. We know South Africans are protective of their pap and chakalaka recipes, but this one is worth making room for. Click here for the recipe.

And we’re finishing sweet:  Koeksisters.

There is a particular pleasure in the first bite of a koeksister: it’s the crackle and sweet syrup. This version has its own twist, Huletts Yellow Sugar with fresh ginger, lemon, cinnamon and star anise. Make a batch, enjoy with some tea and create a sweet moment worth remembering.
