On the 3rd of June 2024, Qoqisizwe Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre was devastated by a tornado that struck Tongaat. Thanks to the collaboration between Tongaat Hulett and other stakeholders under the Partnership with Purpose initiative, the school was rebuilt and reopened within two months. This partnership is a collective effort involving businesses, NGOs, and government departments that provide essential support to communities during recovery efforts.

The school was founded in 1984 by Mr. Mandlenkosi Ntuli, and since then, Qoqisizwe ECD has served as a safe haven for over 115 children. The handover officially took place on the 6th of September, the school came alive again with children’s laughter and parents’ smiles, it was a true celebration for the community of Magwaveni.

Eduard Louw – Project Coordinator of Partnership with Purpose, expressed pride in welcoming back the children. “This handover represents hope and resilience for the families affected by this disaster,” he stated, highlighting the importance of ongoing support for the community.

Rob Aitken, Acting CEO of Tongaat Hulett, emphasised the power of unity during challenging times: “The rebuilding of Qoqisizwe Creche showcases what can be achieved when businesses, NGOs, and government departments come together. By leveraging our unique strengths, we can tackle significant societal challenges.”

As we celebrate this new beginning, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a role in rebuilding Qoqisizwe ECD. Together, we are growing a sweet future for our children and communities.
