In our country, Youth Day is a time for us to reflect on the past, the present, and chart a course for the future. At Tongaat Hulett, this Youth Day holds special significance as we reflect on the impact of our Growing A Sweet Future initiative on the youth in the south of KZN.
In April, we proudly sponsored uniforms and shoes for disadvantaged children at Mgada School, in the heart of Engonyameni near Umlazi township. The school has 680 learners, and many of them travel long distances to attend school, we are deeply honoured to support their educational journey. The school is led by the inspiring Principal, Mrs. Bongekile Buthelezi. This school has 21 dedicated educators and stands as a beacon of hope in a rural area.
We extended our support to two more schools. At Mthombeni Primary School in Amanzimtoti, 187 children received brand-new uniforms, and at Masuku Primary School in Efolweni township, 100 children stepped into new shoes. Each sponsorship was accompanied by school signage, which not only enhanced visibility but also contributed to the dignity and identity of the schools.
The impact of new school uniforms on students’ lives cannot be overstated. Tongaat Hulett is dedicated to minimising the number of children whose school attendance is affected by the lack of proper attire. Our goal is to boost the confidence and self-esteem of these young learners, ensuring they can attend school with pride and dignity. Additionally, providing proper footwear protects them from injuries and infections, especially in rural areas where they may have to navigate long distances on rough terrain to get to school.
Every child deserves the opportunity to pursue their education with dignity and pride. By providing essential items like uniforms and shoes, we are not just offering material support but also growing a sweeter, more hopeful future for these young learners.
