Looking back on 2024, we are proud of the positive change Tongaat Hulett has been a part of through our Growing A Sweet Future initiative. In December 2024, we were privileged to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many women, both young and old. From our involvement in the Umkhosi Womhlanga celebration on the 15th of December, to our visit to the Sizamaukuyaphambili Co-operative on the 17th of December, here’s a look back at some of the highlights.

Celebrating Women at Umkhosi Womhlanga (The Reed Dance)

The Umkhosi Womhlanga is a powerful cultural tradition that honours young women, playing an important role in instilling values of self-worth, dignity, and pride among young black girls. Tongaat Hulett was honoured to support this significant occasion.
As part of our contribution, the Felixton Extension staff worked tirelessly to pack over 250 essential hygiene kits for the young maidens attending the event. These kits, which included Tongaat Hulett-branded sling bags, sanitary pads, and deodorants, were distributed to ensure the maidens were well cared for during the festive season and until schools reopened in January 2025. We are grateful to the Inkosi Mahlalothini Foundation in Esikhawini and the Tribal Traditional Council for allowing us to support these young women and be a part of this important cultural celebration.

Empowering The Community Through Food Security

In addition to supporting cultural traditions, Tongaat Hulett remains deeply committed to promoting food security. On 17 December 2024, we visited the Sizamaukuyaphambili Co-operative in Macekane. The co-operative, which focuses on providing fresh produce and agricultural products to the community, has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination over the years.

Our visit to the co-operative was just one of the many ways our Socio-Economic Development programme team continues to support these incredible women. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring festive cheer, offer encouragement, and reinforce the importance of continuing to support their agricultural endeavours. As we look to 2025, we are excited about the promise this project holds and look forward to sharing more about their journey in the new year. Be sure to follow us on social media to stay updated on their progress.

These initiatives are just the beginning, and as we enter 2025, we remain committed to continuing our support for women’s empowerment. We are proud to be playing a part in shaping a future where women can thrive, build strong communities, and contribute to the economic and social fabric of society. Here’s to a 2025 filled with continued progress, shared success, and the promise of a sweet future for all.
