Tongaat Hulett was proud to witness a momentous day in Mathonsi, where 179 households received their title deeds, marking a major milestone in South Africa’s land restitution journey. The official handover, held in KwaDukuza’s Ward 5, was made possible through the government’s programme and was graced by leaders including the Honourable Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr Mzwanele Nyhontso; MEC for KZN Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms T KaMadlopha-Mthethwa; Chief Land Claims Commissioner, Ms Nomfundo Ntloko; and Ilembe District Mayor, Cllr T Shandu. The community was alive with joy, pride, and hope for new beginnings.

Tongaat Hulett is proud to have stood beside the Mathonsi grower community on this momentous day. Over the years, we’ve partnered closely with the KwaMathonsi Trust, supporting the sugarcane operation that has anchored this community’s economic activity. We were deeply honoured to be recognised by Inkosi Yesizwe, Mr Thanduzulu E Mathonsi, for our ongoing contribution. Our shared journey reflects that with strong collaboration and a shared vision, communities can thrive and grow a sweet future.

The land claim, lodged by Inkosi Thanduzulu Edward Mathonsi, covers 2,841 hectares and benefits 575 individuals across 179 households, 30% of which are female-headed. With over R10.1 million in total project investment and more than 60,000 tons of sugarcane produced across the past three milling seasons, the impact of this initiative is clear. Beyond the fields, Tongaat Huletts  commitment has extended into education, wellness, and empowerment through back-to-school campaigns, career expos and youth sport tournaments that uplift the next generation.

The title deed handover was more than a legal milestone. It was a celebration of dignity, progress, and the strength of a united community. We remain committed to walking this journey with the people of Mathonsi and look forward to #GrowingASweetFuture together.
